Education & Guidance
The
Career Education and Guidance Department at the Lexington School
provides career education classes and internship experiences to
all high school students with the ultimate goal of preparing all
students to develop and implement a transition plan from high
school into their next phase of life. The ultimate outcome of
the Career Education/Guidance Department at the Lexington School
for the Deaf is for every student to be able to develop, use,
and explain his/her transition plan so that he/she can independently
take the necessary steps towards reaching his/her personal goal.
Some students will transition directly into a job, others into
a job training program or a college program. Individual guidance
for students and parents is provided as part of implementing the
transition plan. The curriculum for the career education class
is divided into six courses. Students must pass all six courses.
A summer jobs program is offered to high school students who meet
the qualifications. The program is a joint effort between Lexington
School and the NYC Summer Youth Employment program. Lexington hires
the job coaching staff and S.Y.E.P. pays for students' salaries.
Students are placed in various jobs around New York City. The
goals and outcomes of the program are directly connected to the
career education curriculum.
In addition to career education classes, the Guidance Dept. offers
guidance programs for elementary and middle school students.
