Elementary
School
The
Elementary School comprises Grades 1-5. Classes are self-contained,
with an average of eight students, with one teacher and one assistant.
The curriculum follows the New York State Department of Education
Standards for all subjects including language arts (reading, writing,
communication), mathematics, science, social studies, and health/family
living. In addition to these subjects, students have classes in
physical education (including swimming), dance, art, library,
and keyboarding.
Students have individual and group speech therapy sessions as indicated on a student’s IEP. All classrooms have FM amplification systems available. Most classes are conducted using spoken English and sign language. The elementary school currently has one class with an auditory/oral approach to communication. Students in all grades also have the opportunity to participate in a conflict resolution program implemented jointly by classroom teachers and counselors. Beginning in grade one, students are involved in a cognitive education program called Instrumental Enrichment. All students take standardized tests annually, as well as mandated New York State Pupil Performance Tests in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Students have the option of participating in an after school program once a week (transportation is provided). Students in the program receive additional support in test-taking strategies to prepare for the New York State tests.
