High
School
...to
engage teen-agers both academically and socially so they can apply
what they are learning at any time in their lives.
We have
a registered high school program, grades 9 to 12 with 140 students
enrolled. Their ages range from 14 to 21. Since we are a registered
program we must meet the New York State requirements in order
to award Regents, local or IEP diplomas to graduates.
Lexington’s High
School offers academic courses designed to help students meet
New York State learning standards. The range of courses is similar
to most High Schools in the state of New York. There is an additional
component to our program. Being Deaf will never exclude a student
from participating as an equal in any activity. Often it is these
activities that serve as a springboard to future goals, careers,
interests or hobbies. Any afternoon, evening or weekend any one
of these activities may be occurring. Below is a list of the courses
and extracurricular activities currently offered in the High School. Students who are under the age of 21 years as seniors may elect to stay in school in the “12+” program to transition to work and independent living.

In order to
teach students how to work effectively in cooperative situations
there are meetings with the students in each grade as a class
group. They have specific tasks. They elect officers and committees.
One of the tasks of each class is Community Service.
There is another
student organization, Student Council, which is made up of elected
officials and representatives from each grade level. The Student
Council meets to solve issues between classes and address the
needs of the high school based on students' concerns.
