Pre-School
and Pre-Primary Program
Educational
Philosophy
Early childhood is an optimal time for communication, language,
and cognitive development to occur. This development depends largely
on the quality of the interaction between parents and child and
teachers and child.
The education
program in our Preschool-Preprimary department is based on a sound
developmental theory called Mediated Learning. When parents and
teachers incorporate mediated learning strategies, learning is
more effective, interactions between child and adult are more
productive and children become more independent, self-sufficient
learners. Our parent education program helps parents learn mediating
strategies they can use in their natural interactions with their
child at home.
Communication
Approaches

Learning to communicate is a vital part of a deaf child's early
education. Children are encouraged to develop effective communication
skills which include spoken language, speech-reading, auditory
processing and sign language. Children are encouraged to use amplification
whether it is in the form of post-auricular hearing aids, FM systems
and/or cochlear implants. Most classes are conducted using spoken
English and sign language. The preschool department currently
has one class with an oral/auditory approach to communication.
